This hand-stitched Edwardian paper gown is based on a French evening dress designed by Paul Poiret between 1912-1914. Examples of Poiret's early work, such as this dress, are rare; at the time he was working with neoclassical silhouettes designed for a slim, uncorseted figure.

The dress is made from a Japanese paper in blush, with little flecks of gold and silver scattered across the surface. Japanese tissue stands in for both the lace overlay on the bust, and the sheer black silk over the shoulders. Glass beads decorate the skirt as well as the left shoulder, with rayon floss adding shine to the strands of beads. Hand-embroidered lines imitate the seams and folds of the dress. It is stitched onto cold-pressed 100% cotton paper. The original dress is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession 2009.300.2503).

The dress is six inches tall, stitched by hand on 8x10 inch paper, which means that it will pop right into any commercial frame in that size, and be ready to hang on your wall.

Materials: Japanese paper and tissue, glass beads, silk floss, and cotton floss on cotton paper
